Parade and general membership meeting will be held at the Highland Center (520 Olive Street), Wednesday, February 1st at 6:00 pm.
If you have an entry in the parade, you or your driver and float lieutenant must be there.
Anyone not present will not be able to participate in the Parade.
Applications are due before this meeting.
Drivers will need to submit their driver’s license and proof of insurance Certificate carrier and date of expiration no later than January 25, 2012 (City Requirement).
Drivers may not be substituted after their information has been submitted.
Drivers must have information on them day of parade!
Questions regarding the parade should be directed to Emma McCarty (773-8349) or Sherry Walker (455-8761) at parade@thekreweofhighland.org.
E-mail is preferable as we both work during the day.
Non-Parade questions should be directed to Matthew Linn (402-1132) or Krewe Capt. LeVette Fuller at levettefuller@gmail.com (347-0898).
These are both excellent sources of information regarding the parade, but Emma and Sherry have final say in all parade matters.
All float riders must be members of the Krewe of Highland.
A group membership may be applied to all riders on the float.
The only exception to this rule is if the float is representing another recognized Krewe (i.e. royalty or captain’s float).
If you are renting a float from another Krewe (or any other supplier), that rental must be made directly with the renting Krewe.
In this instance, because of the extra effort and expense that the Krewe of Highland puts forth for these floats, there will be a special surcharge fee payable to the Krewe of Highland, in addition to the float entry fee.
There will be no exceptions to this rule, so please don’t ask.
If you don’t want to incur this fee, it is recommended that you build your own float.
Float Requirements:
- All drivers must have a functioning cell phone during the parade and the number must be provided with driver’s license and insurance information for float or driver.
- All Float materials must be fire retardant.
- You must have a functioning fire extinguisher on the float.
- No open flames during the parade.
- All riding lawn mowers should have the blade drive belt removed.
- Flaring over the trailer tires must extend one foot. This keeps people from getting their feet caught under the tires.
- All motorized float entries that do not meet the above flaring requirement (item 6) must have walkers at all four corners of the float to keep people from being run over and to pick up beads and redistribute.
The walkers must be able to walk 3 miles non-stop or have substitutes available.
- No glass containers are allowed at any time during the staging or parade. Please use plastic cups.
- The pulling driver must be sober, this means stone-cold sober.
The pulling driver will be subjected to mandatory breathalyzer testing before and after (and possibly during) the parade.
The timing of this will be set by the police at the parade meeting.
All drivers must reports for breathalyzer during the parade set up at this time.
Any recorded alcohol level will result in removal and/or arrest of the driver.
It is suggested that drivers not drink to excess the evening prior to the parade or use mouthwash on the day of the parade.
- Drivers should remain with their vehicles once parked in case floats need to be moved around.
Parade Logistics
- Floats rented from the Krewe of Centaur will be escorted to the Byrd High School parking lot (North-East corner of Line Avenue and Gladstone) by the S.P.D. and drivers will need to meet at the Centaur Den at 7:00am (we know it’s early). These floats will travel, en masse, to Byrd High School and will park in the Gladstone Parking Lot and the immediately surrounding area of Gladstone.
- Smaller non-rental parade vehicles should line up along Creswell beginning at 10:00am. If you prefer to be at the front of the parade, get their a little earlier.
- There is no alcohol allowed on the grounds of Byrd High School. In respect to Byrd High School, please follow the spirit of this rule. This means that if there is even a photograph of anyone with an alcoholic beverage on Byrd High School grounds or empty beer cans left in the parking lot, we may not be allowed back. Please respect this rule.
- Per S.P.D. and our insurance policy, no vehicles that are not in the parade will be allowed in the staging area on Gladstone between Line and Creswell. Plan ahead and preload all beads, ice chests, etc. prior to parade day. We’re not kidding — if you sneak in to load your float we will embarrass you in front of your kids and/or girlfriend. So don’t do it, really.
- The parade will begin promptly at 2:00pm.
- At the beginning of the parade, do not throw until your float has passed Forest Street on Creswell. If you are unfamiliar with the parade route, there will be “no throw zone” signs posted in this area. Wait until your float has passed these signs to throw beads.
- Confetti and Silly String are strictly forbidden. Do not throw these toxic, difficult to clean up and otherwise hateful substances during the parade.
- Please throw behind the people in the front row. Do not throw on the inside of the turns or when float is stopped. Walkers should pick up throws in the street. This is to keep you from running over children.
- Campaigning for any office is strictly forbidden on the parade route. Anyone caught campaigning will have taco sauce slung at them by the current King and Queen during the post-parade Carnivale.
- Drivers must remain with their vehicle in the parade staging area in case floats need to be moved around.
- To maintain good relations with Byrd High School and the surrounding neighborhood and businesses, remove all the trash created by your float from Byrd High School grounds at the end of the parade. Recycling for many of your trash items will be available in the Byrd High School parking lot.
- Krewe of Highland — HUZZAH!!
If you would like to have your float parked next to Columbia Park for the Carnival de Columbia, please let us know A.S.A.P. This is available on a first come, first served basis. You may have ice chests and grills on board at this time.
Certificate of insurance from the Krewe of Highland will be furnished to the Krewe of Centaur for coverage in our staging area and on the parade route.
Until correct payment has been received the application will not be considered complete. Parade participants will not be logged until completed application and full payment (mailed checks or online payment) are received.
